A Paniya Spring
This beautiful image is from a small Paniya village in southern India. The Paniya are very poor and are virtually slaves to their landlords in the Indian state of Kerala. The famous Valliyurkavu festival in Wayanad district is reminiscent of the resultant slave trade. During this festival, slaves were sold, purchased or even exchanged by landlords and local chieftains, in front of the Bhagavathi temple. Very few amongst the Paniya have any form of education and their main means of income is subsistence farming and daily wage labor.
A few Paniya have begun following Jesus as a result of many years of ministry. These new Christians find it difficult to grow into maturity as the truths of the Holy Scripture are not available to them in their Paniya language. EBT is working to translate the Bible in their own language.
